What is STIR/Shaken?

What is STIR/SHAKEN?

STIR/SHAKEN stands for Secure Telephone Identity Revisited (STIR) and Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using Tokens (SHAKEN). It is a framework and set of protocols developed to combat illegal caller ID spoofing and enhance the authentication and verification of telephone calls.

How STIR/SHAKEN Works
  • Caller ID Authentication: STIR/SHAKEN is designed to verify the authenticity of caller identification information (caller ID) displayed on incoming calls. It helps ensure that the calling number has not been tampered with or spoofed.
  • Digital Signatures: When a call is made, the originating service provider signs the caller ID information using digital certificates. These digital signatures are used to verify the authenticity of the caller ID information.
  • Certificate Authorities: Certificate authorities issue digital certificates to service providers, establishing trust and enabling the verification of the digital signatures. These certificates are used to confirm that the calling number matches the originating service provider.
  • Verification and Verification Levels: The receiving service provider verifies the digital signatures on incoming calls to determine if the caller ID information is authentic. Different verification levels (A, B, C) indicate the level of confidence in the authenticity of the caller ID.
  • Call Attestation: STIR/SHAKEN introduces the concept of “attestation,” which indicates the level of confidence that the caller ID information has not been tampered with. The attestation level is included in the call signaling and can be used by the receiving party to assess the call’s legitimacy.
  • Display of Verified Calls: Calls that pass the verification process are labeled as “Verified” or “Authenticated” on the recipient’s device, indicating a higher level of trust in the caller ID information. This helps users make informed decisions about answering or blocking calls.

STIR/SHAKEN is a collaborative effort between telecom service providers, industry organizations, and regulatory bodies. It aims to combat illegal robocalls, caller ID spoofing, and fraudulent activity that exploit vulnerabilities in the telephone network.

By implementing STIR/SHAKEN, service providers can enhance call authentication, increase trust in caller ID information, and provide users with a means to identify and avoid unwanted or fraudulent calls. It is a significant step towards improving call transparency and protecting users from malicious or unwanted communications.

Obtain Your STIR/SHAKEN Certificate

ClearlyIP Can Now Sign Calls for Originating Service Providers Whom Have Obtained Their Certificates
If you have been verified as an Originating Service Provider and obtained your STIR/SHAKEN certificate, Partners can provide us with their certificate. We will then sign all of their calls from their Customers (that belong to the Partner) with their own Certificate. This can be for our existing ClearlyIP Partners reselling ClearlyIP SIP Trunking services billing customers directly and for new Partners that are looking to align themselves with a service provider that can sign their customer calls. New Partners can migrate their customers over to ClearlyIP’s SIP Trunking services and enjoy the benefits of competitive pricing and a powerful platform, with the peace of mind of STIR/SHAKEN compliance for customer calls.
